- Halifax’s new £245 mortgage fee. Anyone taking out a mortgage with the Halifax will now have to pay £245 for the pleasure now that they have introduced a new ‘mortgage account fee’. They say that this new fee replaces lots of other ad-hoc fees and actually makes the whole process cheaper and more transparent, others think it’s sneaky and taking advantage of borrowers. - It’s cheaper to buy than rent. Abbey’s latest figures indicate that people are increasingly better off buying rather than renting. Six months ago, when looking at renting over 25 years as opposed to buying, buying worked out to be the cheaper option by £5,800. Today’s figures show that it’s now more than £10,000 cheaper to buy a house than rent in the majority of the UK. Read more at The Telegraph.

- Seven in ten new houses faulty. According to a study by the OFT, 70% of buyers found their new-build properties to have faults, although the majority of problems were only minor grievances. Still, it’s pretty annoying when you expect the place to be perfect. 48% of those surveyed would consider buying a new-build again. Read more at the BBC.
