UK property websites are 80% templates with no soul

Written by Mike Carter on May 22, 2008

Using the Pareto rule, I would guest-imate that most of the estate agents in this country run websites that are based on templates. Knowing that vebra, expert agent, dezrez and a whole host of other property software vendors rely on templates to power their customers websites, I would bet the farm that 80% is accurate. What weakness do we see in this strategy ? Many…..

Zoomf looks at property websites all day long and for most of the sites, we see the same thing:

  1. Nice home page with contact details
  2. A property list

Pretty short list right? So how do you turn that drab and content-poor website into something that can actually help your marketing efforts like outlined here by Agent Genius?

Step 1. Start a blog. Why? Because you need to have your expertise as a local agent released to your consumers. Blogs take a day to setup at most and like this one, the software, Word Press, is free.

Step 2. Define your blog strategy ie what is your blog about. For example, one strategy could be to define your blog as the guide to living in X. X being your local area.

Step 3. Tell your staff to post once a week taking 15 minutes a week to come up with something related to property and your locality. 15 minutes a week is zero impact on your resources.

Step 4. Watch the results in traffic to your website.
Most agents would say to me, Mike you’re crazy. We don’t have time for this. We think only tech people would care or read our blog. To that I say you’re dead wrong … here’s why:

  • The web is not going anywhere. More people spend time on the internet than watching TV now. Broadband is everywhere.
  • If you don’t take advantage of these tools today, your competitors will. Just look at the US property landscape. Using the latest tools like Twitter and Facebook is rampant.
  • Your knowledge needs to be online in front of your consumers. Transparency in the property markets is accelerating at a huge rate, you want to be part of it not watching from the sidelines.

So get that blog going asap.
